When you have an appointment to have your balance and/or dizziness symptoms evaluated, there are a few steps you will need to take prior to the video nystagmography.

New patients should arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment time. Please remember to bring your insurance identification card and referral, if needed.

Patients who have a managed care plan or HMO require this information for billing. Please also complete the dizziness questionnaire provided to you when you scheduled your appointment.

How to Prepare for a VNG Test

Medications listed will negatively affect your test results. Stop taking the following medications/products 48 hours before your scheduled appointment:

  • Dizziness medications (Antivert, Meclizine, Valium, Scopolamine)
  • Sedatives (sleeping medications)
  • Muscle relaxants
  • Tranquilizers
  • Antihistamines (including allergy medications)
  • Antidepressants (Prozac, Lexapro, Paxil, Celexa, Elavil)
  • Caffeine (coffee, tea, sodas, energy drinks)
  • Anxiety medications
  • Alcohol
  • No smoking for 3 hours before test

Please do not discontinue prescription medications without checking with your physician who prescribed them. If you cannot go without a medication listed above, please call Dr. Bea to discuss this before coming in for your evaluation.

Please do not eat or drink anything for 3 to 4 hours before your scheduled appointment. Be aware that no eye makeup or eyelash extensions can be worn during the test. Tattooed eyeliner must be covered with foundation. We also recommend that you wear comfortable clothing. Women may wish to wear pants.

The balance test may take 60 – 90 minutes to complete. We recommend that you bring someone to accompany you. After the balance test is performed, you will schedule a follow-up appointment with your physician to review your test results, along with your symptoms and any other diagnostic tests performed, to reach a diagnosis.
