Effective Treatment for Sinus Infections

Understanding Sinus Infections and Finding Lasting Relief
That constant pressure behind your eyes. The facial pain that worsens when you bend over. The thick nasal discharge that never seems to clear. If these symptoms sound familiar, you're likely dealing with sinusitis. What begins as a simple cold can evolve into a sinus infection that disrupts your sleep, derails your work productivity and forces you to cancel activities you enjoy. When over-the-counter remedies fail and symptoms persist, you need more than temporary relief.
At Daniel J. Leeman, MD, we understand that sinusitis affects more than just your sinuses. Our Austin ENT practice specializes in diagnosing the type of sinusitis you have and developing treatment plans that address the underlying cause. Whether you're suffering from a sudden infection or battling symptoms that have lasted months, Dr. Leeman's expertise in sinus disorders helps you breathe freely and feel like yourself again.
What Is Sinusitis?
Sinusitis is inflammation of the tissue lining your sinuses, the air-filled cavities behind your forehead, cheeks and eyes. When healthy, these cavities produce thin mucus that drains continuously through small openings into your nasal passages. This drainage process keeps your sinuses clear and prevents bacterial growth.
When sinusitis develops, the sinus lining becomes inflamed and swollen. This swelling narrows or blocks the drainage openings, trapping mucus inside the sinuses. The trapped mucus creates sinus pressure and pain while providing an environment where bacteria or fungi can thrive, potentially leading to infection. The inflammation itself causes many sinusitis symptoms, even before infection develops.

Types of Sinusitis
Understanding which type of sinusitis you have is crucial for effective treatment. The three main classifications are based on how long symptoms last and how often they occur.
Acute Sinusitis
Recurrent Acute Sinusitis
Chronic Sinusitis
Understanding Your Sinus Anatomy
Sinusitis can affect one or multiple sinus cavities, resulting in distinct patterns of pain and pressure depending on which areas are involved.
Your four sinus cavities include:
- Frontal sinuses: Located above your eyes in your forehead
- Maxillary sinuses: Situated in your cheekbones on either side of your nose
- Ethmoid sinuses: Positioned between your eyes, behind the bridge of your nose
- Sphenoid sinuses: Located deep behind your nose, near the center of your skull.
It's time to see an ENT specialist like Dr. Leeman when
- Symptoms persist beyond 10 days without improvement
- Facial pain becomes severe or constant
- Over-the-counter treatments provide no relief
- You develop a fever above 101°F
- You experience vision changes or a severe headache
- Multiple sinus infections occur within a year
Sinusitis Treatment Overview
Treatment approaches differ significantly between acute and chronic sinusitis. Dr. Leeman develops treatment plans based on the type, severity and underlying causes of your condition.

Acute Sinusitis Treatment
Most cases of acute sinusitis improve with conservative management. Nasal irrigation using saline solution helps flush mucus and allergens from your nasal passages, promoting drainage and reducing inflammation. Over-the-counter decongestants provide temporary relief by shrinking swollen nasal tissues, though they should only be used for a few days to avoid rebound congestion.
Nasal corticosteroid sprays reduce inflammation when used consistently over several days. These prescription or over-the-counter sprays are more effective than oral medications for treating localized sinus inflammation. Pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen manage facial pain and headaches.
Antibiotics become necessary when bacterial infection is confirmed or strongly suspected. Dr. Leeman determines the need for antibiotics based on the duration and severity of your symptoms, as well as the characteristics of your nasal discharge. Completing the full antibiotic course prevents the development of antibiotic resistance and ensures complete infection clearance.

Chronic and Recurrent Sinusitis Treatment
When sinusitis persists for more than 12 weeks or recurs repeatedly, more comprehensive treatment becomes necessary. Balloon sinuplasty provides a minimally invasive option for opening blocked sinus passages without tissue removal. This in-office procedure utilizes a small balloon to widen the sinus openings, restoring normal drainage.
The ClariFix procedure treats chronic rhinitis by reducing the nerve signals that cause excessive nasal drainage and congestion. Turbinate reduction shrinks enlarged nasal structures that block sinus drainage. These minimally invasive treatments can be performed in our office with local anesthesia.
For severe cases, functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) removes tissue blocking sinus drainage and may include removing nasal polyps, correcting a deviated septum or enlarging sinus openings. Dr. Leeman performs these procedures at the Mueller Surgery Center using advanced endoscopic techniques that minimize discomfort and recovery time.
What to Expect From Sinusitis Diagnosis and Treatment
Understanding the evaluation and treatment process helps you prepare for your visit and set realistic expectations about recovery.
Comprehensive Evaluation
Dr. Leeman begins with a detailed discussion of your symptoms, their duration and any previous treatments you've tried. He'll ask about factors that worsen or improve your symptoms and whether you have seasonal patterns.
The physical examination includes nasal endoscopy, a procedure in which a thin, flexible camera is used to examine the nasal passages and sinus openings. This allows Dr. Leeman to see inflammation, polyps, structural abnormalities or other issues directly. CT scans may be ordered to evaluate the extent of sinus inflammation and identify anatomical factors that may be contributing to your condition.
Treatment Timeline
Acute sinusitis typically improves within seven to 10 days with appropriate treatment. You should notice reduced facial pain and improved drainage within the first few days of starting treatment. If symptoms worsen after initial improvement or persist beyond 10 days, contact our office for reassessment.
Chronic sinusitis treatment requires more patience. Medications may take several weeks to reduce inflammation fully. Minimally invasive procedures like balloon sinuplasty provide improvement within days to weeks. More extensive surgical procedures require several weeks of healing before you experience complete symptom resolution.
Long-Term Management
Preventing future episodes involves addressing underlying causes. Allergy testing and treatment helps if allergies contribute to your sinusitis. Environmental modifications reduce exposure to irritants and allergens. Regular nasal irrigation maintains sinus health, particularly during allergy season or after respiratory infections.
Dr. Leeman schedules follow-up appointments to monitor your recovery and adjust treatment as needed. Our team remains available to address concerns or questions throughout your treatment journey.
