The neck is one of the first areas to show the signs of aging. Our Austin neck lift is a set of cosmetic surgical procedures to enhance the appearance of the neck. Various techniques may be used to remove excess skin, smooth and tighten vertical bands on neck muscles, and remove excess fat.

What is a Neck Lift?

Neck lift surgery is performed to restore tighter, firmer, more youthful contours to the neck. Technically known as lower rhytidectomy, a neck lift improves visible signs of aging on the neck and jawline. This procedure is performed to treat of range of cosmetic issues, including:

  • Loose skin on the neck
  • Excess fatty deposits under the chin
  • Abnormal contours caused by muscle banding in the neck
  • Skin laxity and excess fat with jowls in the lower face
  • Restore youthful definition to the jawline

Who is a Good Candidate For a Neck Lift?

Signs of aging are more difficult to camouflage in the neck than in the face. If you are troubled by an aging appearance of the neck, surgery may be the best solution. You may be a candidate for a neck lift in Austin if you have signs of aging such as:

  • Double chin
  • Poorly-defined jawline
  • Vertical bands in the neck
  • “Turkey neck” (sagging neck skin, or wattles)
  • Wrinkles and creases in the neck

What Can I Expect With Neck Lift Surgery?

Dr. Leeman performs his Austin neck lift surgery under local anesthesia with sedation, or under general anesthesia, according to your preference. Depending on the extent and severity of issues to be addressed, he may perform either a traditional neck lift or limited incision neck lift.

Traditional neck lift technique

With this technique, the incision may begin in the hairline at the level of the sideburn, continue down and around the ear, ending in the hairline at the back of the head. Through this incision, fat from the jowls and neck may be sculpted or redistributed, the platysma muscle may be tightened, and tissues of the neck may be repositioned. A separate small incision may be made under the chin to allow for repair of the muscle and liposuction.

Limited incision technique

In a limited incision neck lift, the incision is made only around the ear. These shorter incisions may mean an easier and faster recovery, along with smaller incision lines. However, results are less dramatic than with a traditional neck lift.

What is Recovery Like After a Neck Lift?

A bandage will be gently placed around your neck and face to help minimize swelling and bruising. Recovery may last one to several weeks, depending on the patient and the extent of the procedure. You can expect some swelling and bruising, which may take up to three weeks to resolve completely. However, most people are able to return to work and their normal activities in 10 to 14 days after neck lift surgery.
